Mission Statement

In 1995 Rich Fetchiet responded to a call from several midwestern college umpires to create an organization that would both enhance collegiate-level umpiring and improve relationships with college and university baseball programs. Hence, the CBUA was formed on a few simple premises.

  • The CBUA will recruit qualified and dedicated amateur umpires interested in working at all levels of college baseball.
  • The CBUA will offer umpire improvement opportunities by providing training sessions and educational materials. The CBUA will host annual clinics devoted to officiating philosophy and umpire mechanics. The CBUA will administer an annual rules testing program. The CBUA will provide materials such as rule books, mechanics manuals and videotapes, pregame outlines; etc.
  • The CBUA will liaison with the NCAA National Umpire Improvement Program to ensure CBUA umpires benefit to the fullest from the NCAA’s programs.
  • The CBUA will form alliances with other umpire associations and professional organizations to ensure all interested CBUA umpires benefit from affiliated programs.
  • The CBUA will liaison with NJCAA, NAIA, and NCAA league and conference umpire supervisors and schedulers to provide qualified umpires for assignments and/or staff memberships.
  • The CBUA will interface with schools, leagues, conferences, and other amateur baseball organizations to establish relationships that will lead to enhanced opportunities for umpiring assignments.
  • The CBUA will standardize the uniform for umpires working games assigned by CBUA assignors.
  • The CBUA will create and utiltize a standardized umpire evaluation process which will incorporate input from senior umpires, coaches, and qualified independent observors.
  • The CBUA will remain committed to the highest standards of officiating professionalism and integrity both on and off the field.
The CBUA’s reason for existence is to improve collegiate baseball umpiring and to enhance all aspects of officiating college baseball.
