3-Man Mechanics

JUMP – Start of Game

 

U1 - Jumpers/Toss/Slash Time           Center/Lead           (Away/To)

U2 - Eight non-jumpers                       Center/Lead

R   - Good toss/Freeze                       Trail

 

When do we re-toss the ball?

v    Obvious bad toss

v    The ball falls to the floor untouched by either jumper

 

TIP #1:       Tell them what you want them to do. 

v    “Hold your positions”

v    “Let the ball get all the way up”

 

FRONT-COURT

 

What is the most important officiating position (L/C/T) in the front-court?

 

Lead

Controls the rotations - thus, controls the “look” the crew gets in the front- court.

 

Keys to Rotating for the Lead

v    Big man in opposite post calling for the ball.

v    Majority of players weak side.

v    Trap weak side near half-court or corner.

v    Know the offense.

 

TIP #2:       If you’re looking there, get there – quickly.

 

 

 

Calling across the lane.

v    Give C first shot at call

v    C has seen the full play

v    It’s okay to be late

 

Center

v    See through the play

v    Back-side look

v    Know who shares your look (table/opposite)

v    Contrast Opposite/1st ½ vs. Table-side/ 2nd ½

 

Trail

v    Don’t bail.

v    Counts.

v    Slash time – front-court.

v    Close down.

v    Drive to basket from Trail.

v    Help – obvious.

 

PRIMARY AREAS

When do you make a call outside of your primary area?

v    First consider should I pass?

v    Safety

v    Non-basketball contact

v    “Aw shit” calls

v    Save the crew

v    Not often

 

TIP #3:       Know what your partner(s) can’t see.

Straight-line, crowd, game collapses to one side

TRANSITION

 

v    Center must work all the way across the floor

v    Why? Tip #3.

v    Help Trail in pressing situations

v    Don’t leave the scene

 

TIP #4:       Center comes up the floor in an “open” position with the second defender.

 

 

HELP/CHANGING CALLS

 

Sometimes confused as one item, should be handled differently.

 

HELP

v    Example ball kicks out on baseline behind Lead.

v    Comes out of a crowd during a rebound.

v    Long pass, was it tipped?

v    Hand up, open hand, ask for help

v    Partner steps toward gives a firm call with signal.

v    Watch players

v    Educated guess

v    NO arrow.

v    Put it in play.

 

TIP #5:       An educated guess is better than a random choice.

 

CHANGE

v    I’m dead wrong

v    Come to me with information

v    Let calling official change the call

v    Do not just change it.  Why/

o       May be letting a foul go.

o       May have been touched subsequently

o       Try fixing a wrongly corrected call – can you spell “long night”?

 

TIP #6:       No egos  - get it right.

 

GAME MANAGEMENT

 

Substitutions

v    One traffic cop

v    C/T table side

v    Pass the responsibilities

v    Stop sign

v    Be visible

v    Be ready to sound whistle if necessary

 

TIP #7:       Traffic cop must know count to proceed.

 

5th Foul/Technical Foul

v    Non-calling new C/T to inform coach

v    Partner/Coach/Timer/Player

 

Timeouts

v    They’re looking at you

v    Blocks –full, Top of key 30

v    Third official with ball at throw-in spot

v    Get the inbounds spot right

 

TIP #8:       When going long don’t run your partner off his sideline unnecessarily.

 

Double Whistles

v    Give up to primary

v    Ask yourself the question why did I make a call outside of my area?

v    Should be rare outside of paint

 

TIP #9:       Don’t start selling until you know what you’re selling.
